How to use FITTA better.

Body mass index condenses weight and height into one number. This calculator applies the WHO adult formula, classifies the result in the official bands, and shows the weight range that matches BMI 18.5 to 24.9 at your height. Enter kilograms and centimeters; the page converts height to meters. It is a screening baseline for anyone about to change training or diet. BMI cannot tell fat from muscle and does not replace a clinician. FITTA keeps the same number as a trend beside workouts, meals, and weekly weigh-ins.

What BMI is and how the formula works

Adult BMI is body mass in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. The WHO formula is BMI equals weight in kg over height in m times height in m. Convert centimeters first: 175 cm is 1.75 m. At 80 kg and 1.75 m the math is 80 divided by 1.75 times 1.75, or 80 divided by 3.0625, which is 26.1. At 65 kg and 1.62 m it is 65 divided by 2.6244, about 24.8. The imperial form of the same equation, useful only as a check, is 703 times weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared. At 176 lb and 69 in that is 703 times 176 over 4761, about 26.0.

The number places the weight-to-height ratio on a shared population scale. It does not say whether extra mass is fat, muscle, or water. For a given height, each BMI point equals height squared in kilograms: about 3.06 kg at 1.75 m, 2.56 kg at 1.60 m. That conversion turns a band target into concrete kilos. This page uses the metric formula and returns one decimal place, the WHO label, and the 18.5–24.9 weight range for the height you enter.

How WHO classifies adult results

WHO adult cutoffs start at age 18 and are the same for men and women. They do not shift with age, ethnicity, or training status in the standard chart this calculator uses. At 1.70 m, BMI 18.5–24.9 is roughly 53.5 to 72.0 kg. At 1.80 m it is about 60.0 to 80.7 kg. The tool shows that range for your height and how many kilograms you sit from the nearer edge when you are outside it.

A BMI of 24.8 and a BMI of 25.2 land in different bands, yet the weight gap is small. Treat the cutoff as a zone marker, not a verdict. A four-week trend is more useful than a single morning value.

What the number does not measure

BMI ignores body composition. Two adults at 1.78 m and 85 kg share a BMI of 26.8: one may carry 12 percent fat, the other 28 percent. Lifters, wrestlers, and people with dense bone or a lot of muscle often land in overweight without excess fat. The reverse also happens. Someone at BMI 23 can have little muscle and a high waist.

The formula also ignores fat distribution. Visceral fat raises metabolic risk more than subcutaneous fat on the limbs. Waist circumference, a body-fat estimate, and clinical labs fill the gaps. This calculator flags underweight and obesity class II or III, ranges where changing training or intake without a professional raises risk. Pregnancy, edema, dehydration, and post-workout fluid shift the scale. Weigh under similar conditions and compare weekly averages, not one reading.

Common mistakes when you calculate or read BMI

The most common metric error is leaving height in centimeters. Eighty divided by 175 squared is 0.0026, a clinically meaningless figure. Divide centimeters by 100 first. Rounding height up also moves the result: one extra centimeter at 1.75 m drops BMI from 26.12 to 25.83. Measure in the morning, no shoes, back against a wall. On the imperial side, dropping the 703 coefficient is the same class of mistake.

Weighing at random times adds noise. A salty dinner, yesterday’s training volume, or a menstrual cycle can move 1 to 2 kg, enough to change the first decimal and, near a cutoff, the band. Average three to seven mornings. Treating 18.5–24.9 as an aesthetic target is another miss. That band describes population risk, not the weight where you lift best. Strength athletes often sit above 25 with stable labs. Chasing BMI 20 with an aggressive deficit can cost lean mass.

Using BMI in training and diet

If BMI is above 25 and body composition confirms extra fat, a moderate deficit of 300 to 500 kcal below daily expenditure, protein at 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg, and strength work two to four days a week is the usual path. Losing 0.4 to 0.7 kg per week protects muscle better than sharp cuts. At 1.75 m, about 3 kg moves BMI by one point.

If BMI is under 18.5, the priority is a supervised surplus of 250 to 400 kcal, the same protein range, and progressive loading. Moving from 17.5 to 18.5 at 1.65 m takes about 2.7 kg. If you already sit between 18.5 and 24.9 and you train, treat BMI as background and track circumferences, loads, and photos. When to pair BMI with other measures

BMI answers one question well: is the weight-to-height ratio in a zone linked to higher or lower population risk. It answers another poorly: am I gaining muscle or fat. For that second question, add waist circumference, skinfolds, or the U.S. Navy circumference method, and watch training performance.

A working rule: if BMI and waist both rise, the gain is mostly fat. If BMI rises, waist holds, and loads go up, the gain is leaner. If BMI falls and lifts stall, the deficit is too large. Expect BMI to cross bands during a cut or a hypertrophy block. That does not void the plan. Adjust calories and volume from a four-week trend, not from one calculation.

Population risk tied to very low or high weight is lower inside that range, but the best point still depends on composition, performance, and medical history. People who lift can sit near 25, or slightly above, when body fat is under control.

Is BMI 25 overweight

Yes. On the WHO adult chart, 25.0 is the first value in the overweight band, which runs through 29.9. The practical gap between 24.9 and 25.0 is a few hundred grams for most heights. Treat the cutoff as a zone, not a sentence. Confirm with waist, a body-fat estimate, and the weight trend before you change diet or training volume.

Can BMI be high if I lift weights and still be fine

Yes. BMI does not split muscle from fat. A lifter at 1.78 m and 90 kg has a BMI of 28.4 and may still be lean. The reverse is also true: BMI 22 with little muscle and a large waist. If you train with heavy loads, read BMI next to circumferences, photos, and performance, not on its own.

What is a healthy weight for my height

There is no single ideal weight. The range tied to BMI 18.5–24.9 is a population reference. At 1.70 m it sits near 53.5 to 72.0 kg. At 1.80 m, near 60.0 to 80.7 kg. The calculator shows that range for the height you enter. The weight where you perform best may sit near an edge, or slightly outside it, if composition is favorable.

Does BMI work for children and teens

Not with these cutoffs. The bands on this page are the WHO adult categories from age 18. In children and adolescents BMI is read on age- and sex-specific percentile curves, not at 18.5, 25, and 30. Anyone under 18 needs a pediatric reading. Do not apply the adult chart to a growing teenager.

How do I lower BMI without losing muscle

Drop 300 to 500 kcal below daily expenditure, keep protein at 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg, and keep lifting. A loss of 0.4 to 0.7 kg per week usually protects lean mass better than a steep deficit.
